There are suspicions that this could possibly be a genius real life Borat setup with Phoenix playing an off-the-deep-end hoax on America, which I could definitely see. Either way, this interview is frickin' hilariously awkward and tense. He even drops a discretely annoyed F-bomb at Paul Schaefer. Paul Schaefer! What has he ever done to anyone?
Phoenix has been on Late Night before, sans beard & shades, and conducted a mostly normal interview, so I'm leaning towards the hoax theory, but whatever. Classic overnight material.
